UNEB Releases 2024 Primary Leaving Examination Results Kampala, Uganda – January 23, 2025: The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has officially released the 2024 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results at a ceremony held at State House Nakasero, officiated by the Minister for Education and Sports, Mama Janet K. Museveni. Under the theme “Embracing Security and Holistic Assessment of Learners in a Dynamic Environment,” UNEB's Chairperson Prof. Celestino Obua and Executive Director Mr. Dan N. Odongo, alongside the Board's officials, shared insights on the overall performance of the candidates. 1. Improved Performance In a promising development, UNEB Executive Director Mr. Dan N. Odongo revealed that the overall performance of candidates in 2024 showed an improvement compared to 2023. A total of 798,771 candidates were registered for the 2024 PLE, marking a 6.6% increase from the 749,254 candidates in 2023. 2. Performance Details Despite a slight dip in the number of candidates obtaining Division One, the overall passing rate saw an upward trend. 84,301 candidates attained Division One, compared to 86,582 in 2023. Meanwhile, 397,589 candidates passed in Division Two, 165,284 in Division Three, and 75,556 in Division Four. There were 64,251 candidates who were ungraded and will need to repeat Primary Seven. "Despite the decline in distinctions, the overall pass rate improved significantly," Mr. Odongo noted. 91.8% of the candidates passed in 2024 compared to 88.0% in 2023. 3. Special Needs Candidates The Board also highlighted notable performance improvements among candidates with special needs, particularly the deaf. Prof. Obua reported a significant reduction in the proportion of ungraded candidates from 44% in 2023 to 23% in 2024. He acknowledged the financial challenges in providing special arrangements for these candidates but emphasized UNEB’s continued commitment to supporting them. 4. Gender Performance Boys outshone girls overall, with 45,203 boys passing in Division One compared to 39,098 girls. Boys also had fewer ungraded cases (28,110) compared to girls (36,141). Girls, however, performed better in English, while boys excelled in Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. 5. Increased Candidature A notable increase was observed in candidature, with 797,444 candidates sitting the exams from 14,883 centers, compared to 749,347 in 2023. Of these, 524,025 were Universal Primary Education (UPE) beneficiaries, while 273,419 were from non-UPE schools. Accessing Results Parents, candidates, and well-wishers can access the results via SMS by typing their PLE Index Number and sending it to 6600 (e.g., PLE00123/356, send to 6600). Schools can access the results through their online portals, with printed copies distributed by respective District, City, or Municipal Inspectors of Schools.
